Hello everyone! In case anyone is wondering I am loving school and am even more excited to become a dentist. Only about three more years!
I want to let you in on my journey during dental school out in Loma Linda California. I am going to start posting about how my classes are going and what I am learning and doing in my labs. I have just entered my fourth quarter (and last) of my first year! Time has flown by and I have already learned more than I ever imagined I would.
To catch you up… I am taking a bunch of basic science classes like physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, and some dental ones as well like restorative, periodontics, and caries management. My favorites so far are anatomy lab and restorative lab because they are so hands on.
In anatomy lab, I get my own cadaver. I have spent a lot of hours learning all the muscles, bones, blood vessels, nerves, organs, and other body structures and landmarks. This quarter is more of a focus on the head and neck area, I didn’t realize how much anatomy is packed into such a small space! Soon we will be starting on neuroanatomy and I’ll get to look (“literally”) more into brain anatomy, I hope that isn’t too much information (:
Restorative lab is about tooth morphology and other dental procedures like waxing up teeth, making impressions, pouring models, and now we are starting to fill teeth! I just got an instrument issue of maybe 20 hand instruments and 100 burs for my electric hand pieces that I will be using in lab.
Once a week I get to go up to clinic and assist a third or fourth year student on patients that come in for their dental work. I mostly observe but every once in awhile I get to do some hands on assisting. I’ve been told that by this time next year I will start getting my own patients that I will be doing cleanings and exams.
